SpeakZilla

Support

SpeakZilla is made by one person. Write to me directly — there is no ticket queue and no bot in between.

I usually reply within two working days. If you are reporting something that went wrong, telling me your phone model and what you were doing at the time will nearly always get it fixed faster.

Common questions

The app is not hearing me

SpeakZilla needs microphone access to score your speech. If you declined the prompt, turn it back on in Settings → SpeakZilla → Microphone. It also needs an internet connection: scoring happens on a server, not on the phone, so lessons will not work offline.

Speak fails every time: “The microphone isn’t responding”

Sometimes the iPhone's audio system gets stuck, and no app can use the microphone — Voice Memos fails too. SpeakZilla then says the microphone isn't responding (iOS itself calls it “Session activation failed” or “resource not available”). Closing apps does not clear it. Restart your phone; that fixes it.

The example audio is silent or very quiet

Lessons play even when your phone's silent switch is on, because hearing the example is the point of the app. If a clip is still quiet, close the app fully and reopen it — that resets the audio session. Bluetooth headphones that are connected but idle are the other usual culprit.

How is my score calculated?

Your score comes from every sound in the sentence. Half of it is the average of all the sounds; the other half is the average of your weakest third, so the sounds you find hardest count extra. Small words that are naturally said lightly, such as “the” and “to”, never count against you. Under each result, Work on these sounds shows which sounds pulled the score down, and how to fix them.

My scores dropped after an update

In October 2026 scoring became stricter (see above). Before that, most people scored above 90 whatever their level, which told them very little. Your saved scores and stars were adjusted to the new scale at the same time, so they stay comparable: nothing was lost, and everything you had unlocked is still open. A lower number is the new scale, not your English getting worse.

My score seems lower than I expected

The score measures pronunciation accuracy only — how close each sound was, not how fluent or fast you were. It is deliberately strict, because a score that congratulates everyone teaches nothing. Tap any word after a result to see how it was heard.

If you only say part of a sentence, SpeakZilla will not score it at all. It will tell you how many words it heard and ask for the whole sentence, because half an attempt is not a pronunciation problem — it is an unfinished attempt.

Why can I only do three lessons a day?

New lessons are limited to three a day to keep practice regular rather than crammed — short and daily beats long and occasional. Your first ten lessons are uncapped so you can settle in, and after that:

What are eggs for?

Eggs are earned by practising — finishing a lesson, completing daily missions, keeping a streak. They buy extra lessons and streak freezes. They cannot be bought with money.

I lost my streak

A streak counts days you finished at least one lesson, and it resets if you miss a day. A streak freeze, bought with eggs, covers one missed day automatically. Streaks, daily limits and missions roll over at your own midnight — the time zone your phone is set to.

I forgot my password

Use Forgot password on the sign-in screen and follow the emailed link. If the email does not arrive within a few minutes, check spam — and write to me if it still has not.

How do I delete my account and my data?

In the app: Profile → Delete account. This permanently removes your account, your progress and any recordings. It cannot be undone, and you do not need to contact me to do it.

What is stored and for how long is set out in the privacy policy.

Which accent should I choose?

Alex is British, Sofia is American. Neither is more correct — pick the one you would rather sound like. You can change coach at any time in Profile, and your progress carries across.

Reporting a problem

Bug reports are genuinely welcome and get read by the person who can fix them. The most useful ones say what you expected, what happened instead, and roughly when. If you can, include the version line from Profile → About — it identifies exactly which build you are running.
